The Parts of a Bong

Although all bongs look different, most of them consist of six main pieces. Below, we will break down each piece and describe what its used for.

  1. Tube: This piece, also known as the neck, is where the user places its mouth. It is usually long and cylindrical. The tube connects to the base to create the overall shape of the bong.
  1. Base: The base is the part of the bong that you fill with water. True to its name, the base is the bottom of the bong. It is usually the widest piece and allows you to easily set it down.
  1. Downstem: This piece is a hollow tube that slides into the base of the bong. It sits inside of the water at the base of the bong and connects it to the bowl. The downstem is an important component of the water filtration process.
  1. Bowl: The bowl is the part of the bong where you place your weed. This piece is detachable and slides into the downstem to connect it to the bong.
  1. Carb: The carb, also known as a carburetor, is the hole that the downstem slides into. This piece allows air flow throughout the bong and allows users to “clear” their smoke.
  1. Percolator: This piece is integral to the filtration process. It’s what creates the bubbling sound that you hear when someone smokes a bong. It allows bubbles to form within the base of the bong while it’s smoked.
